Big Band der Bundeswehr
Big Band der Bundeswehr
Swing meets uniform – more than 50 years of show, sound, and groove
For more than five decades, the German Armed Forces Big Band has been synonymous with top-quality music, captivating shows and the unmistakable sound of a modern big band – all while wearing uniform. Under the direction of band leader Lieutenant Colonel Tobias Terhardt, it is one of the most important and exciting big bands of our time.
This ensemble also occupies a special position within the Bundeswehr's military music service. Instead of marches or classical orchestral literature, the Bundeswehr Big Band opts for a wide variety of styles from contemporary popular music – presented in a multimedia stage show that thrills both audiences and organizers alike.
What makes the musicians from North Rhine-Westphalia so unique is their dual mission: they are sonorous ambassadors for Germany and at the same time the musical calling card of the Bundeswehr – professional, passionate, and personable.
There is no musical uniformity here. Each of the 24 instrumentalists has been carefully selected, trained at the most renowned colleges of modern music, and is a master of their craft. When the Bundeswehr Big Band takes the stage, an energetic sound brings all the elements of music together into an unforgettable experience. Every concert is a show full of surprises, emotion, and joy – an invitation to leave everyday life behind for a while.
When it was founded in 1971 by the then Minister of Defense and later Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, the ensemble was given a clear mission: to create a modern sound for a modern army. The audience had to be able to experience the hits of their time, the classics of past decades, and the timeless world of swing. This concept still appeals today – whether to state guests, presidents, or even the Pope: wherever the Bundeswehr Big Band plays, feet tap and fingers snap to the beat.
Another characteristic: since its inception, the musicians have played without pay. The box office proceeds – now well over 20 million euros – have benefited people in need since the first concert.
This swing band is also in high demand internationally: New York, Oslo, Nairobi, Riyadh, Madrid, Cape Town, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Rio de Janeiro – there is hardly a continent where the Bundeswehr Big Band has not performed. Whether at diplomatic receptions, large galas, or major sporting events such as the Olympic Games, the band always knows how to inspire audiences, hosts, and guests with its music.
Behind every concert is meticulous teamwork: an experienced planning team coordinates tours at home and abroad, while a ten-person technical crew transports more than a hundred tons of equipment. A ten-by-six-meter LED wall, state-of-the-art lighting and sound technology, cameras, and microphones ensure a show that meets the highest standards in terms of both sound and visuals.
After more than five decades, the Bundeswehr Big Band has made a name for itself internationally in show business – as a guarantee of quality, professionalism, and musical passion.
The result: a formation that is not only considered the "best-known and most popular unit of the Bundeswehr," but also a cultural flagship of the Federal Republic of Germany – modern, appealing, and always captivating.
